Have you tried to solve any
endings in the 2x2 Collection on the site? Not easy, ah? It
just reminds you that the game is not over until the very end!
I just stumbled upon the ending played by Mr. Rakhunov where
he won playing white, as his opponent did not find the trick
to draw. Your challenge here is to find that trick! Black to Move and Draw.

The "Mini Challenge" became
a "Maxi Pain in the b..." as no one could master it! Two
of the players privately admitted that they could not solve
it, even "trying five different ways!" One thought there
was a mistake in the setup - the position was an "obvious
loss".
One can really sympathize with a poor guy who
lost the game - no one told him there was a draw; but here, a
group of tough players, including some Top Masters, fresh,
alert, forworn - and still they can not find a
draw!!! | |

Isn't it a riot, Charles? Black do everything
against the "common sense" - instead of fighting for the
center, or running for the king, they gleefully give another
checker, bringing even more opponent’s checkers to the center,
and then moving the “wrong” checker (don’t they suppose to
move checker 5 instead of 6?) take a spot half a board away
from the king row. The final position is an insult – with
your move, an extra piece, total center and just about to king
– and still a draw! This is High Checkers - Pure
Poetry! | |

If I gave this 3x3 ready
with a solution people would just glance through it - but
having worked on it and being frustrated by it made it a
memorable and valued lesson.
I wonder - what do you
call this idea of going in between checkers? We need to name
the ideas so we can discuss them using common terms.
